I love the scenery in this one Cent! Well done!

Regarding the EM interference? *sigh* I was hoping you would surprise us by proving all our dark forebodings on the last page wrong... :-(

so... Enter the Killer Android, JSN-1313?
Centcomm 17th Jul 2019, 1:36 AM edit delete reply

thanks :D its not Iray sadly .. but imn trying
DLKmusic 17th Jul 2019, 4:18 AM edit delete reply

It's not the method, Centy! It's the results that count when you get down to it!

And this landscape looks like it's straight out of the high desert here in California! Only thing missing is the Andreas fault, lol!
Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 8:20 AM edit delete reply
It doesn't have to be, it looks great like this, excellent detail and I'm starting to like Skeeter, please don't kill him...yet.

Re:Alt text, Awesome :D

Uh-ohh EM interference bad! Cyana's a cute kid, and she should get back inside now. As in right now. Immediately.

plays jaws music...
Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 8:26 AM edit delete reply

Trouble coming there is, evil these two are mmmmm
Nystran 17th Jul 2019, 3:54 AM edit delete reply
Cute kid or not, narrative dictates there must be a kidnapping. You can't just have multiple kidnapping events in a row fail without reason, and certainly not on new characters.
So all we can pray for now is that the level of violence towards machines and minors remains within acceptable boundaries, however you may define those.
megados 17th Jul 2019, 8:17 AM edit delete reply

Jaws music, and narrative dictates? Oh No! D:

Well, keep in mind that if that killerbot is lurking just offpanel, this would be the first time we've seen it interact with a completely unarmed opponent having no apparent tactical value to any faction. There's no tactical advantage in her being dead. So this might be where we find out whether it needs any reasons to kill, or whether its purpose is simply to kill whenever it can.

If it's bright enough to figure out that there's a significant faction that wants her back badly enough to structure its tactics around the goal of getting her back, and that they'll want her alive, then she acquires value.

If it is capable of and sees value in negotiating, then it might try to keep her alive to bargain for something. Otherwise it might try to keep her alive to use as bait.
Sheela 17th Jul 2019, 2:53 PM edit delete reply

Don't forget that bait has to be small enough to be able to wiggle on the hook.

Wiggle girl, wiggle .. it will bring all the boys to the yard!

They shouldn't overdrive like that.

Did something happen to the road in panel 4 that we see clearly in panels 1-3? Or is it just hidden by the progressively lower and lower viewpoint?
Centcomm 17th Jul 2019, 2:05 AM edit delete reply

Actually thats a 3delight glitch .. not a road
DizzasterJuice 17th Jul 2019, 3:09 AM edit delete reply

You mean Iray glitch?
Evervigilant 17th Jul 2019, 3:49 AM edit delete reply
I believe Cent mentioned that due to extreme render times for Iray with her current video card she was going to go back to former software. I pitched in a few credits donation and I believe some others may have as well, to try and help possibly upgrade to a better video card so renders will not take as long if Iray is used.
DizzasterJuice 17th Jul 2019, 4:14 AM edit delete reply

I think this page is Iray though so she hasn't switched yet. Also, that particular glitch is a problem with Iray because it doesn't use skydomes. The skies are built-in. 3delight uses skydomes that are easy to scale or move on axis so it doesn't have that problem.
Centcomm 17th Jul 2019, 4:25 AM edit delete reply

Nope this is all 3delight with uber en virom ent
Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 8:21 AM edit delete reply
It's a road now ;) gotta have something for whoever generated that EM pulse to skulk in on

Why is Skeeter indifferent to the EMI? Because, presumably, if the expensive toy lost communication, it should go into 'hover mode'; implying the EM is bad enough to mess with the repulsors. And Skeeter also appears to be equipped with repulsors, but did not go 'thud'.
megados 17th Jul 2019, 9:37 AM edit delete reply

Why should EMI necessarily cause the ship to hover?
Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 9:41 AM edit delete reply
I'd think that Olina probably built Skeeter, so he'd be EM shielded and most likely well armed since she insisted Cayla take him with her. The toy on the other hand is the usual overpriced, underengineered crap pushed on kids through TV shows and incessant commercials that's looking for the first chance to self destruct so the parents have to pony up for a new one...shielding costs money that cuts into profit and adding a one-line "notice: exposure to EM fields voids warranty" in the manual is cheaper than actually putting any in.
Gilrandir 17th Jul 2019, 10:22 AM edit delete reply
@megados, remotely teleoperated aerial vehicles generally are not the sort of thing that (if communication fails) you want to just stop operating and plummet. You also typically don't want them flying in a straight line until they run into something or have passed hopelessly out of range to re-establish command. So, if possible, you would expect it to drop into a 'temporarily autonomous' mode in which it hovers or circles until it either starts getting new commands or runs out of fuel.

And, @Oldarmourer, as we both know, shielding costs weight, space, credits that can be expended on other things unless the thing you need happens to be shielding. Now, without knowing Skeeter's original design goals, there's no way to say that Skeeter may or may not have been designed with some level of EMI shielding in place. But that, also, says things about Skeeter that we might not want to assume out of the box. My actual point is that it is typically easier to shield computing devices and comms than big macroscopic things like engines. This is because, as a rule, big macroscopic things like engines are too BIG to easily be affected by EMI. So, if the EMI is bad enough to be affecting the toy's engines, and not its onboard computers, Skeeter might well be using the same kinds of engines and thus be similarly affected -- except he isn't.
megados 17th Jul 2019, 10:35 AM edit delete reply

It really depends on the system. It certainly could go into a hover mode, but not necessarily. RC planes actually do just fly away if they lose communications. Many newer drones do land or "come home", but some don't. Some just drop. I've never seen one that just hovers, because what if it's a hundred feet in the air? Waiting for it to lose power might take a while. I guess you could shoot it down or something. My point is mainly that although it might go into a hover, it just as easily might not, and I wouldn't automatically expect it to. :D

It may not be having any effect on the ship's (or Skeeter's) motive power.
Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 11:48 AM edit delete reply
A thin layer of fine metal mesh typically blocks most harmful EM frequencies, that's what I've seen used in HERO shielded ordnance fuzing rooms and on military aircraft panels, with each panel electrically bonded to the adjacent ones to make a sort of Faraday cage.

It's simple and it works, and toy companies wouldn't include it for the trivial cost but mostly for other reasons related to continued repurchases.

Given that Olina is apparently a brilliant engineer of the sort that is in high demand to do contract work, I'd suggest that living in the wastes with a young daughter, she created Skeeter as a 'guardian/companion/babysitter' and he is much more than meets the eye...he's a 'Chekhov model' :)
megados 17th Jul 2019, 11:59 AM edit delete reply

Yup, that works, and for a low cost device such as in a toy, metal foil could be used, and is used on many devices. EM interference could also affect the signal carrier in a signal saturation type effect, though, and that's somewhat more difficult to counter, because the receiving device has to be outside the Faraday cage.

Chekhov's Skeeter? :D
Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 12:45 PM edit delete reply
It might be affecting her control panel too, although it looks pretty big for a toy controller and I imagine it's her personal 'PADD' they just downloaded the operating manual and files to.

If Olina is as good an engineer as it seems, she probably has a shield generator built into it too..if parents buy 'bulletptrrof backpacks' for their kids today, think what might be used in the wastes with random gutters dropping by for tea and whatnot.

Olina didn't seem too concerned with Cayla going outside the compound at dusk, even with her father leaving, just told her to 'take Skeeter with her' I kind of think this breed of skeeter bites...hard ;)
Sheela 17th Jul 2019, 3:07 PM edit delete reply

Quote "... he's a 'Chekhov model' :) "

Oh, oh I like that … that's a lovely name for a model!!
Quick Rose, we have to take notes, they are breaking out the good stuff again. 😁
Lurker314 17th Jul 2019, 3:56 AM edit delete reply
Why in the **** doesn't Skeeter go into full-blow "must protect squishy human" mode? That EMI wasn't there a minute ago. Something is projecting that thing & moving in this general direction. If that doesn't scream "grab your kids off the streets", I don't know what does.

Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 1:21 PM edit delete reply
It seems that the toy dropping and Skeeter's detection of EM is happening at the same time we see it, there's been less than a second to far :)

Maybe the EM pulse was intended to be directed at Skeeter and the toy was the closest thing that was flying and targeted by mistake? It's the first time she's gone outside the wall with it after all...
Sheela 17th Jul 2019, 3:10 PM edit delete reply

Also, we don't know how common EM pulses are in that area .. for all we know, it may be a completely common occurrence.
Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 3:31 PM edit delete reply
It may go unnoticed because of the EM interference interfering with the scanners that would otherwise pick up EM interference.
mjkj 17th Jul 2019, 4:15 AM edit delete reply

Uh-oh... EM interference...

someone is out to get them... =S it the deathbot that (almost) killed Ophie (and her troupe)??? :o
DLKmusic 17th Jul 2019, 4:27 AM edit delete reply

I'm tellin you, it's JSN-1313, and he's armed with an EM Pulse Emitter (because he doesn't want to be stereotyped as just an axe/chainsaw murdering android!)
Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 8:24 AM edit delete reply
That could be JCN-1313 if it's going to be that powerful...
HAL is just IBM rolled back one letter, JCN is the letters rolled forward by one ;)
Sheela 17th Jul 2019, 2:39 PM edit delete reply

Oh thank god, I'm not the only one that saw the IBM link. 🤣
Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 2:48 PM edit delete reply
I know it was used in 2001 to get HAL's name, I'm not sure what the 9000 refers to and I'm too lazy to look it up.
Oldarmourer 17th Jul 2019, 7:11 PM edit delete reply

Huh...apparently it was an accident in naming...guess I've been wrong all these years...not a first.
I dunno though, if I was a writer I'd be claiming it was my idea all along ;)

Arthur C Clarke is quoted as having said:

...about once a week some character spots the fact that HAL is one letter ahead of IBM, and promptly assumes that Stanley and I were taking a crack at the estimable institution ... As it happened, IBM had given us a good deal of help, so we were quite embarrassed by this, and would have changed the name had we spotted the coincidence...

During production it was brought to IBM's attention that the film's plot included a homicidal computer but they approved association with the film if it was clear any "equipment failure" was not related to their products.

*jingle* … Glad to be of Service! 🤣

Of course he plays jingles, this is the one Olina's going to use to market his design :)

Haegan2005 17th Jul 2019, 8:00 PM edit delete reply

My suspicion is that skeeter is designed to protect the girl from bandits and is designed to handle things that a store bought city toy would not be built to deal with in any shape or form.

And knowing the toy companies, it makes perfect sense for it to fall out of the sky once it loses the controlling signal. Damaged items can be a source of revenue after all.

Skeeter may not notice a jamming device as he is self contained and does not rely on external comms to function. The toy did.

Having said that, I am sure that he can remote connect to activate comms or security functions somewhere and may well try to do so next. Assuming that he survives that long, of course.
megados 17th Jul 2019, 9:02 PM edit delete reply

When Cyana loses the connection to the ship, at first, Skeeter stays in character; and after she asks if he caused it, he reports some EM interference as the ship descends. Skeeter might not recognize it as being a jamming device, but he seems to know the interference is there.
