reposted from yesterday.

Well this is annoying it looks as though the computer may be going out and according to Marcus. ( my tech person ) he said it could be heat or hardware or software. the only parts that are left from the old computer are my CPU , Motherboard and Case. But we are going to try the cheapest solutions first. replacing the thermal paste or the heat sink. sadly im as broke as a church mouse at the moment. SO any additional donations would be helpful! Thanks

This weekend... I will be starting the migration of her pc to expand the storage.. so here I am slumming for donations for her..... will need a SSD (looking at the evo 850 pro 256) and am going to need a copy of windows 10 home for her.....

for those that are tech savy you will understand the monumental task of setting up a new os.. moving user data between 4 hard drives.... consolidating data to a larger 5TB drive and then... making daz and all the libraries work again.... a task I have been dragging my heels on for some time because of lack of 2 things.... Ill know more about her computer problems this weekend as I dig in to it friday.. unable to look at it till then due to other commitments that I have tonight... but thuse far.. it is one of 3 basic problems... heat.... os corruption.... or hardware... first problem with the heat may be resolved by re applying the dialectric goop.. (arctic silver) and cleaning out the heat sink that is being used... (alternitvly woudl rather put her on a self sealed self contained watercooler/radiator and just call it a day but... needs must when the devil drives.... so.. this weekend will be full of fun.. adventure... and .... watching progress bars move.....

I don't think Kyle's Dart is going to survive the landing. as long as the passengers do, Ada doesn't care.
Stormwind13 17th Mar 2017, 8:43 AM edit delete reply

Not in the least, Mark. It is only the means to save the patient. Just has to do that job before it gets scrapped!
MikeLinPA 17th Mar 2017, 3:27 PM edit delete reply
So how much time did she save by going suborbital? Did she save 3 hours out of 6 hours? Or did she save 4 minutes out of 3 hours?

Is this actually heroic, or is it just reckless, because I used be an EMT on a small town voluntary ambulance corp, and taking reckless chances to shave 20 seconds off of a run was not looked upon kindly.
Centcomm 17th Mar 2017, 3:36 PM edit delete reply

She cut about 3 and some change hours off the flight time.
Tokyo Rose 17th Mar 2017, 6:39 PM edit delete reply

By taking the suborbital route, Ada saved enough time to make a very significant impact on Acantha's chances of survival.

Thank You both, Ladies!

Running hot and venting plasma! Now that's what I call a grand entrance ... or would that be coming in with a bang. Hey, what's a little hull plating between friends? We got an emergency here.
DLKmusic 17th Mar 2017, 1:15 AM edit delete reply

It's certainly ONE way of bursting onto the scene!
megados 17th Mar 2017, 12:15 AM edit delete reply
Venting plasma is a good way to get rid of excess heat!
Noctis, please be quiet; Ada has to concentrate.
Now it's easy to see what the shield looks like, Centcomm! :D
Just a wee bit longer, Acantha!
Nystran 18th Mar 2017, 9:11 AM edit delete reply
> Venting plasma is a good way to get rid of excess heat!

Marcus, please add some plasma vents to Centcomm's PC. May your campaign be straightforward!
cattservant 17th Mar 2017, 1:29 AM edit delete reply

Hot stuff!
Stormwind13 17th Mar 2017, 8:59 AM edit delete reply

Apparently a little too spicy for Noctis' taste! :-D
Fairportfan 17th Mar 2017, 1:36 AM edit delete reply

Any landing you walk away from...
Timotheus 17th Mar 2017, 5:29 AM edit delete reply

..., or crawl, roll, bounce or are carried away still breathing and in reasonably the same condition and number of pieces you took off in,...
Gilrandir 17th Mar 2017, 1:40 AM edit delete reply
So now Ada and Acantha are both venting plasma. The remedy for each of which is (apparently) specially-purposed foam. The parallels are eerie. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Kyle's Dart doesn't need a new fuel pump when this is all over, as well. ^_^
Speedy Marsh 9th Apr 2017, 4:06 PM edit delete reply
That was bloody awful! I love it!
SMAComix 17th Mar 2017, 1:59 AM edit delete reply

what program do you use for the models?
Centcomm 17th Mar 2017, 2:07 AM edit delete reply

everything is done in Daz Studio :D
antrik 17th Mar 2017, 10:43 PM edit delete reply
Really? My understanding so far has been that the models are imported into DAZ, but usually they have been created using more "serious" modelling software?...
mjkj 17th Mar 2017, 2:35 AM edit delete reply

So, still running hot - but now getting to the final approach...

Acantha, soon you will be as good as new...

...and even without medes gel...

I have that too! Sweet!

I'm going to propose Cheap Trick's "Mighty Wings".
DLKmusic 18th Mar 2017, 3:22 AM edit delete reply

I gotta go with the classic on this one, guys...

Hot Rod Lincoln...
Stormwind13 18th Mar 2017, 9:47 AM edit delete reply

Well that is a good one, DLK. I can see that one, though the Dart doesn't look like a Model A. Here is a link for the song, if anyone HASN'T heard it - Hot Rod Lincoln
Timotheus 18th Mar 2017, 3:03 PM edit delete reply

I'll still stick with leaving that one with Lynn's take off sequence in the Navarro.
DLKmusic 18th Mar 2017, 11:57 PM edit delete reply

Here's something that might work for ya then, Timotheus...

Spaceship Ada Guess you better slow Your flyer down
Spaceship Ada, now baby, Guess you better slow Your flyer down
You been flyin' all over orbit, now
Oh, I guess I have to put your flat feet On the ground

All you wanna do is fly around Ada (Fly Ada, Fly)
All you wanna do is fly around Ada (Fly Ada, Fly)
All you wanna do is fly around Ada (Fly Ada, Fly)
All you wanna do is fly around Ada (Fly Ada, Fly)
One of these early mornins', Gonna be wipin' yo weepin' eyes

ya took off in a tricked out Dart now, A Thirty-Eight twenty-five,
Now you come around Signifyin', now woman You don't even wanna let me ride
Spaceship Ada, now baby, I think you better slow Your flyer down
You been flyin' all over orbit, now
Oh, you have to put your flat feet On the ground

All you wanna do is fly around Ada (Fly Ada, Fly)
All you wanna do is fly around Ada (Fly Ada, Fly)
All you wanna do is fly around Ada (Fly Ada, Fly)
All you wanna do is fly around Ada (Fly Ada, Fly)
One of these early mornins', Gonna be wipin' yo weepin' eyes

Stormwind13 17th Mar 2017, 9:04 AM edit delete reply

Maybe not exactly this, but something like it, I think you are right HiFranc. This is definitely not Ada's first time skating on the edge to save someone. Still this time may be more spectacular than most. :-D
highlander55 17th Mar 2017, 9:43 PM edit delete reply

@HiFranc, I would suspect her regular S&R vehicle is a lot more robust for this kind of flight.
µMerlin 17th Mar 2017, 10:59 PM edit delete reply
Yep. Note the reference to 'civilian craft' in the first panel.

According to the tech page, an Arrow has a cruising speed of mach 3.3. Based on the map, it looks like Nova Roma is roughly by Prince Edward Island and New Troy is near Denver, Colorado. That works out to about a 50-60 minute trip at standard cruising speed. If they could use the Magna-Drive to go mach 15 for part of the trip, it could be significantly faster, and still within design specs.
Timotheus 17th Mar 2017, 5:24 AM edit delete reply

It would appear that Kyle may not have to worry about Lynn finding out about his voice modifications to his ship board computer after all.
megados 17th Mar 2017, 10:53 AM edit delete reply
Actually, I don't know; that might be the only thing left in working order! :D
Stormwind13 17th Mar 2017, 11:08 AM edit delete reply

Possibly megados; however, it might sound more like TeeDee or Tokyo Rose. Nothing but expletives coming out of it after that treatment!!! :-D
Tokyo Rose 17th Mar 2017, 6:33 PM edit delete reply

Dart: "WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME. I HATE YOU."
Lynn: "Hey, I said that a lot in New Rome."
Speedy Marsh 9th Apr 2017, 4:54 PM edit delete reply
Dart: "Oh, baby! It's getting so hot in here! Slow down, I'm burning up!"

Ada: "Uh... Let's NEVER tell Lynn about this."

Noctis: "Agreed... However, as Protector of the Princess of Nova Roma, I feel it is my duty to report this to Acantha."

Ada & Noctis: "... Bwah! Ha! Ha! Ha!..."

Ouch, having just ordered a computer, Cent, I feel your pain.

But meanwhile the first panel entry fx are awesome.

Everything about this page looks amazing! I love the lighting, poses, it's very pleasant to look at. And the dialogue flows nicely.

Noctis being nervous about, well, anything is new! :)

Excellent portrayal of a highly competent person outside their competency zone.
HiFranc 17th Mar 2017, 5:40 PM edit delete reply

Marcus, Can't you simply install Linux and run Daz under Wine (if a Linux version is not available)?
megados 17th Mar 2017, 5:58 PM edit delete reply
That would be nice, HiFranc, but Wine is usually held back by current Microsoft IP. I don't know off hand where the current emulation level is at, and whether it would support the current version of DAZ studio. I don't know whether there is a Linux/Unix version. There are GPL applications for 3D modeling, but I doubt Centcomm wants to start learning a new program right now.

I run Linux almost exclusively, so in general I do agree with you, but if the computer itself is the problem, changing to another OS would just add another layer of trouble, I think. I quickly looked, and there are those who are doing it, but it looks like more trouble to get it going, than most people want to mess with.
That one guy 17th Mar 2017, 6:18 PM edit delete reply
Agreed that Linux is much better when people can use it (the fact that you can just boot off any old system with a LiveDVD in a pinch is not an advantage to be underestimated, and a legal price of free is always nice too), but also agree that I wouldn't trust/count on wine for Daz.

Now, if Daz took the hint about how much rendering big shops do on Linux (seriously, if you're going to farm out computational tasks, why waste money on a Windows license for a large grid and waste the resources to run an unnecessary desktop environment) and decided to release a Linux version (looks like just Win & Mac from help pages) as well, that's another story...
Marcus Ramesy 17th Mar 2017, 6:32 PM edit delete reply

I could install linux and run daz under wine... but... I happen to be friends with Centcom.. and I woudnt wish that hell on any one...

more imporatantly.. Centcom is not tech/computer savy as i am.. and though linux is a fun os... for her needs its windows... besides.. gaming on linux has gotten better with steam.. but... its still not any where near windows..... yet...
Marcus Ramesy 17th Mar 2017, 6:37 PM edit delete reply

also.. daz does have the ability to export out to a render farm.. so you can set up a render farm to offshore the work too.. ive looked in to it.. its complicated and for the scale of work that is being done.. not necessary.. with the exception of braging rights of using a farm... the thing to remember about daz... its digital dolls... its a low end low scale program that does what it does very well... its not a design program like 3d studio max is... its just a set up the scene and light it up... (it does have some animation functions as well look at the animation RUBY which from my understanding was done with daz) i've been waiting for daz to start taking advantage of the CUDA architecture to allow for offloading the rendering process to the math on the video card instead of having to brute force it with ram and processing power...
guest 18th Mar 2017, 10:40 AM edit delete reply
RWBY... RWBY was/is daz 3d because the creator was a broke out of garage start up..an did not have money or time to learn a new program from scratch
That one guy 18th Mar 2017, 12:56 PM edit delete reply
While I agree that gaming & specialized software like Daz without a Linux version are both reasons to avoid Linux for a non-technical person, Linux has gotten to a point for general use (excluding wanting to be able to play all the latest AAA games that come out) that it's fine for a non-technical person. I was ready to move one of my Grandmothers to Mint with MATE a few years ago (all she used in Windows was Firefox, Thunderbird, Libreoffice Calc, & some solitaire games).
Marcus Ramesy 18th Mar 2017, 1:53 PM edit delete reply

Linux is great for the non technical as long as all thy are doing is web based applications...walking a user though installing some apps could get tricky .. apt-get is a wonderful command and has made my life easier on the installnleve for the server I have to admin on... and Linux is awesom for what it is and what it does.. a free alternative to windows....
megados 18th Mar 2017, 9:51 PM edit delete reply
I agree that Linux isn't the best choice here, especially if you have to get this back up quickly, and don't want to have to jump through more hoops each time you want to run any non-native software.

If a person wants to set up a Linux box for that type of application, it would probably be best to do that on a separate machine, and migrate over time. It isn't something you jump to in an emergency. That would only end in tears..
Jake02 19th Mar 2017, 2:05 PM edit delete reply
Marcus, how goes the computer work?
Gilrandir 19th Mar 2017, 3:47 PM edit delete reply
I am sure the computer work is going as well as can be expected. Let's get to the real question: What is the new computer going to be named?

The obvious initial answer would be "CentComm", but that (of course) would be wrong. @Centcomm identifies the user of the computer, who generates all the lovely art. Why be extra confusing?

You could go with some of the other traditionals: "Colossus", "Guardian", "HAL9000", etc. But why be generic?

I suggest "Yasakani" since she is the helper A.I.S. associated with prosperity. @Tokyo Rose's computer should be named "Kusanagi", since she uses it to write "cutting" dialogue. Reserving "Kagami" for @Marcus Ramesy and his administrative role would seem the course of wisdom. ^_^

(Disclamer: all of the above are, of course, just my opinion. Name your computers whatever will bring you joy, or at least amusement.)
Centcomm 19th Mar 2017, 4:17 PM edit delete reply

My current computer is named CENTCOMM-pc and has a pic of Galina as the profile thing.. i might let the readers name the new one. :D
Gilrandir 19th Mar 2017, 4:52 PM edit delete reply
I suggest you let @Marcus Ramesy name it. Trying to get all of us around the keyboard at once -- and then agree on a name -- seems problematic. ^_^

As far as suggestions go, if you didn't want to go with Yasakani, you could go with the doctor-bot from Luna Star. ("Avto-Doc" or "Avi" -- although that might lead to confusion with .AVI files. ^_^) Or any other interesting character whose brain is positronic, rather than synth.

I can also suggest (risking the wrath of some of the other readers) that, after removing your old computer from service, you could retroactively name it "CeCi". ^_^ (What? Too soon?)
oldarmourer 19th Mar 2017, 5:15 PM edit delete reply
since 'HAL' in 2001 was 'IBM' one letter removed, why not add one and call it 'JCN' or add two and call it 'KDO' or 'Kido' and keep the nipponophiles happy ;)
megados 19th Mar 2017, 6:04 PM edit delete reply
Just my opinion, but that is kind of a personal thing . . . your name for it is more up to you, I would say.
Gilrandir 19th Mar 2017, 8:32 PM edit delete reply
Of course, @Sheela hasn't weighed in yet, but I feel confident that they would suggest "Skynet". ^_^
megados 19th Mar 2017, 9:07 PM edit delete reply
Possibly, but wouldn't it have to be somewhat bigger?
DLKmusic (at work) 19th Mar 2017, 10:11 PM edit delete reply
@Sheela Might surprise you and say "Mr. Popidopolis.

My Vote for your computer name, Cent? I agree with @Gilrandir that you should let Marcus have the honors!
Centcomm 19th Mar 2017, 10:20 PM edit delete reply

No Marcus does not get to name my computer..Ive seen his names :D :D
Gilrandir 19th Mar 2017, 11:25 PM edit delete reply
I feel I have been misunderstood ... I wasn't suggesting that @Marcus get to choose the name. Rather that he be the one to carry out the naming process, once the name had been selected. (As opposed to having the collected readership, as a whole, try to carry it out.)

For choosing, I absolutely agree @Centcomm should make sure she will be happy with the name chosen. If she wants to include the readership in the choosing process, that's her call and I think it is sweet of her to consider it.

Now I am curious, though, about what sort of names @Marcus has chosen in the past ...?
Marcus Ramesy 31st Mar 2017, 3:28 PM edit delete reply

the naming convention I use for my home network ... is biblical names... specificaly.. lazarus..... david, goliath... sodom, gomorrah, samson, delilah, abadon, abraham.. and so on..
antrik 17th Mar 2017, 10:54 PM edit delete reply

megados 17th Mar 2017, 11:02 PM edit delete reply
