I have a list of breathable / not breathable foods and drinks .. so far the non breathable list is much much longer .. >_<
Stormwind13 11th Oct 2013, 9:14 AM edit delete reply

LOL CentComm. Well, if you have to bite into it, the food is probably non-breathable. :-D

While you don't have to bite into drink, most of it would be non-breathable (unless you had gills), since liquids displace ALL the breathable gases in the area. :-D

Food seems to be more practical in the Future!
Centcomm 14th Feb 2013, 10:46 AM edit delete reply

New inhaleable food. No fuss. No bother. Nutrients will be absorbed straight through the lungs!
Centcomm 14th Feb 2013, 10:47 AM edit delete reply

ok I gotta see that !
Stormwind13 14th Jul 2013, 11:42 AM edit delete reply

Well there is this CentComm Inhalable Foods. Not EXACTLY what you had in mind, I think but still kind of weirdly interesting.

Then there is this one Inhalable Energy which sounds pretty strange, but might actually work.

I'll leave the experiment up to individuals. I like sitting down to a good meal, myself. :-D

It's a basic early competency test. It comes right after the persistence of breathing evaluation.

For amusing commentary along these same lines, I recommend James White's "Sector General" series. Mr. White's marvelous imagination never heard the term "special effects budget", so some of his alien species have splendidly alien anatomies; a few of them comment disapprovingly on the poor design which resulted in Earth-humans being unable to eat, talk, and respirate at the same time . . .

And they call THIS an intelligent design?
Rashala 14th Feb 2013, 11:10 PM edit delete reply

Well remember......the male body has the -INCAPACITATE* Spot in easy kick position.

and when it is used it has an Areaeffect on all men in a certain radius*

I guess if you want a 5 Star restaurant, you need to go to Nova Roma...
Centcomm 14th Feb 2013, 10:48 AM edit delete reply

Well new troy does have restaurants :D and the food would be recognizable .. mostly
Stormwind13 11th Oct 2013, 9:18 AM edit delete reply

And probably INCREDIBLY bland. I mean, all the food with taste have SOMETHING about them that isn't good for you. :-D You can get all the nutrients you need from some tasteless paste, but that isn't real food (to me at least). :-) However, I think that is what New Troy specializes in.
xpacetrue 13th Apr 2014, 8:59 PM edit delete reply

I've never eaten in New Troy, but I'd bet Stormwind has a point.

This is a society that taxes the daylights out of stuff like liquor, tobacco, and SALT - supposedly for health reasons. (And you know what hospital food tasts like.)

NT food is synthesized instead of grown, harvested, or hunted. Remember what garden-fresh produce is like from a farmer's market? Remember what home-made food is like? You know, like the made-from-scratch pies grandma used to make? Now compare that to a store-bought pie, a microwave dinner or something out of a can.

With 39'th century food synthesizer technology they've probably managed to make stuff that's tasty. Artificial flavors are nothing new. But I don't think they can ever surpass Mother Nature in that regard, especially if they leave out the salt.
xpacetrue 13th Apr 2014, 9:14 PM edit delete reply

Oh, and if they tax the heck out of salt, then does this mean they'd have to add salt tax to stuff like imported meats and produce?

The human and animal body contains quite a bit of salt. But we usually get enough through a normal diet without supplementing with table salt. Many food stuffs naturally contain sodium. Meats in particular. But even fruits & vegies. Otherwise, the cave man (and woman) wouldn't have been able to get enough in their diet without living next to the sea or licking dirt for trace minerals (like cattle).

One more point: Too much sodium is unhealthy. But so is too little. The consequences are nasty - it can even be lethal.
Tokyo Rose 13th Apr 2014, 10:47 PM edit delete reply

One way of thumbing one's nose at the salt tax is to import salt-preserved meats and such, but the cost of such an import is higher than the cost of just paying for the salt.

Most NT citizens don't really think too hard about where their food comes from. The physical appearance is in line with nature, and artificial flavoring is pretty fine-tuned--a steak looks and tastes (approximately) like a steak, a carrot looks and tastes (approximately) like a carrot, etc, so it's not like they just get blocks of off-white food matter--but the synthesized material is created with the intention of providing all the proper nutrients to maintain optimum human health, including sodium, iodine, etc.

Natural foods tastes strange to NT palates because natural foods contain subtle variations not present in 100% synthesized food. What the cow ate, or the mineral content of the soil the carrot grew in, are variables that synth food just doesn't replicate.

aw i like her as a human-human lol
CyberSkull 14th Feb 2013, 5:08 PM edit delete reply

Pseudo-sushi?
Tokyo Rose 14th Feb 2013, 5:12 PM edit delete reply

Or just "sushi", if you consider "sushi" as basically being rice with . . . various stuff in a compact format. :)
CyberSkull 14th Feb 2013, 5:14 PM edit delete reply

Well, given the state of the wastes, I'm not sure if that is "meat" and "rice". It certainly is compact.
Tokyo Rose 14th Feb 2013, 5:27 PM edit delete reply

Oh, it's probably meat. And possibly rice. Details, pfft :)
Centcomm 14th Feb 2013, 7:08 PM edit delete reply

what you think they have rice?? muhahaha!
and meat yes :D
Dragonrider 14th Feb 2013, 8:10 PM edit delete reply

Her rapid switch between self pity and a take charge person shows an interesting dynamic in the mental capability of this unit. She may well require counseling in the near future to resolve the problems.
Stormwind13 11th Oct 2013, 9:28 AM edit delete reply

Dolly is a take charge kind of person. The self doubt is all the strange new inputs she is getting that she isn't sure what should mean (yet). I think she can resolve them with little to no counseling. Of course, it would be MUCH better if she didn't have to do that while traveling the wastes trying to get to Nova Roma to rescue her daughter/sister (Lynn). :-p
Mark_L_A 30th May 2015, 8:02 AM edit delete reply

I'm thinking the longer Dolly is in this new body the further away she strays from the baseline, making a reversion to her old architecture/body harder, possibly to the point where she CAN'T revert backward to even a model 4
