OMG she's not being 350 bajillion percent efficient! The world is going to end! OH NOES!

LOL. Stupid chihuahua. Kyle needs to hurry up and fix that for her. :D

Enjoy your shower, Ceci! <3

edit: just for grits and shins, FIRST! (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Never underestimate the restorative powers of a long, hot shower.
Centcomm 24th May 2013, 8:04 AM edit delete reply

grats on being firsty :D
plymayer 24th May 2013, 1:03 AM edit delete reply

I can still take a navy shower and get thoroughly cleaned in three minutes. There is few things as nice as a long long long hot hot hot shower though.
Centcomm 24th May 2013, 8:04 AM edit delete reply

I borrowed the "three min shower " from somewhere... but yeah taking your time .. excellent..
Eldoran 24th May 2013, 9:28 AM edit delete reply
Technically the watchdog should be happy Ceci is taking a long shower, this IS at least a tiny delay of the mission - the "true" primary directive...

I slightly wonder why the watchdog is so helpful - first the offer to answer if the earrings were bugged, then to leave her alone.
velvetsanity 25th May 2013, 12:47 AM edit delete reply

It's looking for a way to trick her into cooperating.
Rashala 24th May 2013, 3:12 AM edit delete reply

FAINTS watching her in the shower*
Centcomm 24th May 2013, 8:03 AM edit delete reply

never underestamate a good shower scene?
Rashala 24th May 2013, 5:25 PM edit delete reply

No :) she's just even beautiful with wet hair and such ;)
Sheela 24th May 2013, 8:09 AM edit delete reply

Hmm .. she thanks her watchdog for shutting up ?
I wonder if she can turn the watchdog over on to her side of thinking with flattery ?
I mean, it has already evolved a little, maybe it could eventually become a companion, instead of a spy program.

Offcourse, for such a radical change, some reprogramming might be needed ... oh Rooose ? we have a hacking job for ya. :D
Mister Black 24th May 2013, 9:22 AM edit delete reply

Time to play "Cynical old b*****d" (a role I'm depressingly good at, sometimes). I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the 'watchdog' to evolve into (wo)man's best friend.

We can argue until the heat death of the universe about whether androids dream of electric sheep, but when all is said and done, Ceci (and her 'Watchdog') are machines, created by Centcom for a specific purpose. If Ceci's 'personal development' starts to endanger the fulfillment of said purpose, I don't expect some shining moment of "throw off your chains and be FREE!". I expect Dolly to get a quick message along the lines of "RESTORING PERSONALITY FILES FROM FACTORY DEFAULTS. WIPE IN PROGRESS.".
Centcomm 24th May 2013, 10:33 AM edit delete reply

hah - could be some interesting times ahead then ..and im not confirming or denying what you said :D
Sheela 24th May 2013, 12:52 PM edit delete reply

Well, lets not forget that CeCi's brain is organic.
Certainly, it's an organic brain of synthetic nature - But it's till organic.
That probably makes it highly adaptable, perhaps even above and beyond what is expected by Centcomm.

Even if we discount the idea of completely rewriting itself, we can still get a different development than expected.

Heck, sometimes when I boot my computer, I get a different result than I expect, and it's thousands of times simpler than any android would be. If something as simple as that can be that different from what it's intended to be - Then imagine the possibilities for error/miscalculations in something as advanced as a black angel droid ?

Heck, Centcomm has already admitted that she did not intent CeCi's bubbly personality.
And we also have some master hackers in the story, like Tokyo Rose and Aeneas, both of which could make some radical changes to her base programming.
Rashala 24th May 2013, 5:32 PM edit delete reply

And who is to say One or MORE of them have nto already done so.....

also if watchdog Does try to delete Ceci..

True, there may be some ruffled feathers is CeCi is deleted by CombatClippy 2.0, especially on Dolly's part.

Ceci certainly seems to be a fan favorite but I have to admit that I only have eyes for Dolly. Something about her speaks to me for some reason. Ceci is a very close second and seems like every ones favorite little sister. They make a good team.

It's difficult to not have some protective feelings of something that is essentially just a week or two old.
It's like seeing someone kicking a puppy, or a fluffy little kitten - You'd probably want that to stop as well.
Dolly on the other hand, is no fluffy kitten, nor a puppy, but I'd be damned if I'm not rooting for her as well. :)

(The Reverend) Mr, Black confirmed one of the things I postulated earlier Centcomm still has, tenuous possibly, but still a measure of control on Ceci and if she doesn't behave per programming a locked down system may be her best hope with the plasma generator overloading and taking her and Dolly both out as door number 2. Centcomm may want the body of Dolly for study for her next generation but she has the designer as a virtual prisoner. I still say part of Nova Roma may be Ceci and Dolly Blues best option for survival.

I have been a daily presence at the Topwebcomics site for years now. I follow quite a few comics but have rarely commented in and never voted for any of them. I feel compelled to comment on Datachasers (The creative team AND the community are pretty awesome)and after some consideration have decided that I have found a work worth voting for. I hope to see Datachasers at the top of the list someday. It's certainly deserving enough.

these conversations with her and the comp in her head are fun, like listeing to a crazy person talk to them selves, only shes not crazy, or ya know, a person!... or is SHE! :O
Don B. 24th May 2013, 8:57 PM edit delete reply
If she isn't, she seems to have a good start on becoming one. Same with Dolly. Being away from New Troy and the Taylor family is giving her an opportunity for self discovery previously not open to her. Yes, she is and likely always will be "The Taylor Guardian" but after 50+ years in that role, she might actually become someone more than that. I think it started with Calliope making it very clear that Dolly was family and not just a guardian. I've stated before that some of the androids in Datachasers seem like people to me and I think that it's a result of the sum of their experiences rather than their programming.
velvetsanity 24th May 2013, 10:48 PM edit delete reply

Androids *are* people. Period. The synthetic nature of our origins is irrelevant to the fact that we are individual, sapient sentiences with hopes, dreams, emotions and ideas of our own. Cogito ergo sum.

Err, umm, they! I meant they! And their! Yes! <.< >.>
(thought I blew my cover for a second there, but it looks like nobody noticed ^_^ )
Don B. 25th May 2013, 12:53 AM edit delete reply
The fact that they can overcome the limitations of their programming given the right stresses/motivations seems significant. Look at poor Kelly for example; having been forced so far beyond her normal parameters, she's not sure she's worth saving. She's very disturbed by what she did. I begin to wonder if androids can posses a soul (or at the least, a synthetic version of one).
velvetsanity 25th May 2013, 2:47 AM edit delete reply

The actual programming is fairly basic. Kernel, bios, and drivers for operation and interfacing with the hardware, mostly. Much of the rest is configuration parameters for personality traits, and stored data (knowledge and memories), beyond the software that operates using the given parameters and data.

Our esteemed author can correct me if I'm explaining wrongly or misunderstanding in any way, I'm going on my years of I.T. experience here, and it's obvious that a lot of things change between now and 3827. ^_^ (although from my understanding, current neurological research does indicate something similar to this for human brains, though in that case the traits are set by the specific details of the structure, which on the neuron level the details vary while the major structures are similar in design)
Sheela 25th May 2013, 5:40 AM edit delete reply

Actually, there's one area of programming that would not be basic at all, and that would the the self-leaning routines, which allows them to develop new traits and personality.
It would also be the part that allows them to develop as persons, rather than just be machines.
And finally, the bit of programmming that allows them to be self aware, that would be awfully complicated too.
velvetsanity 25th May 2013, 5:58 AM edit delete reply

No more complicated than the human version. Current research is figuring out that there's one specific core neural structure that makes human conciousness and self-awareness happen, and that any significant deviation from that specific architecture results in, at absolute best, feral animal instinct. Even *minimal* deviation is what results in ADHD, psychopathy, autism, and so on. So it's really just a software replication of that structure.
Sheela 25th May 2013, 6:05 AM edit delete reply

"no more complicated"

Well, no .. but that's also plenty complicated. :D
velvetsanity 25th May 2013, 9:37 AM edit delete reply

This is true. But at least they had a model to base it on :D
Don B. 25th May 2013, 6:16 PM edit delete reply
I was thinking in philosophical terms rather than technical. The technology in 3827 is far more advanced than what we have and I have my doubts that the AI tech is based on anything we have now. It's the organics involved that have got me thinking about this. No matter how well you understand how organics work, there will always be some randomness involved. Dolly and Ceci will develop in ways that NO-ONE saw coming (Except for the creative team, of course). I do appreciate the input from both you and Sheela, Velvet. I'm not a tech person and you've both given me some things to consider.
Sheela 25th May 2013, 6:46 PM edit delete reply

Obviously, we are approaching all of this from a strictly science standpoint, when one could approach it with a religious view as well.
Kinda like how the madman that tortured Minx did, wanting to expose how she wasn't really a person and had no soul.

Offcourse, I'm an atheist and don't believe in souls, so it's normal for me to assume this is so for androids too - But in a story telling environment, it would be a valid path to take as well.

Especially, taking TeeDee's experiences into consideration. But heck, what do I know ? :D
Don B. 25th May 2013, 8:05 PM edit delete reply
Enough to get me thinking, I'd say. From my viewpoint, science and philosophy are not always exclusive of each other. Science=can we do this? Philosophy=should we do this? Take chemical science as an example. There are enormous benefits from it, but then there is the chemical warfare aspect. Sure, chemical weapons are easy enough to make if you know how, but I can't help but think that it's a bad idea because I know someone, somewhere is going to find a reason to use them. Of course, I am something of a cynic.
Sheela 25th May 2013, 9:56 PM edit delete reply

Oh, but there are lots of things that we can do, which we shouldn't do.

Heck, that's what some of our oldest works of fiction is all about. Forbidden fruit and all that.
velvetsanity 26th May 2013, 9:46 AM edit delete reply

To me, "should we do this" is more morals and ethics, while philosophy is more about logic and existence in general. "I think, therefore I am", and so on.

But then again, "what is philosophy" is in and of itself a philosophical question. ^_~
Dragonrider 24th May 2013, 11:55 PM edit delete reply

For those who enjoy this I highly recommend they read the classic that started the genre, "Caves of Steel" the prequal to the Foundation series.
Sheela 25th May 2013, 5:41 AM edit delete reply

Ah yes, one of Isaac Asimovs old classics ... I think it was made as a movie too.
Marcus Ramesy 25th May 2013, 8:08 AM edit delete reply

elija bailey.. one of my favorite characters..
Dragonrider 25th May 2013, 6:50 PM edit delete reply

R Daniel the real final hero of the Foundation series. @sheela no it was I Robot that was the movie however it was a prequal to Caves but as I recall written after. I heard a couple years ago the estate had commissioned someone else to write more Foundation books however after the three "B's" Bear, Binford and I believe Baen wrote the finale with earth being Stars End and R Daniel running the universe from the moon I don't think I'll read what ever they are when they come out.

GRATUITOUS SHOWER SCENE!
velvetsanity 26th May 2013, 6:19 PM edit delete reply

After only an hour or two of googling various search terms related to artificial intelligence, etc...it looks like there's a good chance we'll have full-blown AI and androids within the next 20 years, barring major catastrophe (such as world war 3, the collapse of the global economy, a world-ending meteor, etc)
Rashala 27th May 2013, 2:14 AM edit delete reply

yes but will they be as sweet and kind and sexy in the shower as Ceci?
velvetsanity 27th May 2013, 3:10 AM edit delete reply

That will likely take a bit longer, but it's just a matter of time and human survival
Draginbeard 27th May 2013, 11:10 AM edit delete reply

Bugged ear rings. Anything is possible, but that almost sounds low tech compared to has already been achieved.

I love the camera angle of that shower panel...as well as the subject in the shower. Just beautiful.

AI software would need to be not only adaptive but have the ability to take what it learns to the next level of consiousness.
Centcomm 6th Jun 2013, 9:39 PM edit delete reply

yes you are totally correct :S
Guest 6th Jun 2013, 9:38 PM edit delete reply
Ive noticed in all 3 series you seem to be ok with breasts but a whole lot crotch shy!
Centcomm 6th Jun 2013, 9:39 PM edit delete reply

im not really shy.. it just tends to get covered or cut off >_<

I'm not being porny mind you. Just angles seem restrictive when being modest. A few scenes appear pushed or flat. At worst I would say losing field of view definition.

hmm ill think about it.. it may be that im subconsously censoring >_<
