Well that might be a problem...

[ I'm still not convinced that CeCi's epiphany is an accident. And, if doing something about it will be as straightforward as Major Ramesy thinks. ]

I should have figured that out. I was thinking killer robot, not killer machine intelligence.
Laszlo 6th Oct 2013, 10:49 PM edit delete reply

Was reading through the archives to get caught up and came to H-9K reference and it took me a minute or two to "parse" out what it meant. Love the constant old world references scattered through the dialog.
CyberSkull 17th Jun 2013, 11:45 PM edit delete reply

I think that is the meat-hating killer robot from Star Wars.
cattservant 17th Jun 2013, 11:53 PM edit delete reply

Arthur C. Clarke
"2001: A Space Odyssey" and more.
Sheela 18th Jun 2013, 1:44 AM edit delete reply

The Reverse Master Switcher would be shocked, SHOCKED I say, to find out that there are people who don't know of HAL 9000.

Offcourse, he is from the future, so he doesn't get to have a say in it .. yet.
Rashala 18th Jun 2013, 2:40 AM edit delete reply

Ceci would Never go H9k......She looks ALOT better ina shower/clothes than Hal does and her voice and smile are much prettier :)

And cyberskull You are Thinking HK-88
Centcomm 18th Jun 2013, 2:54 AM edit delete reply

H-9K is a refrence to a psychotic rampage where the machine in question kills everything in sight. it is named for the HAL-9000 unit as you have guessed..
velvetsanity 18th Jun 2013, 3:06 AM edit delete reply

The organic-hating assassin droid from Star Wars would be HK-47 (from the KotOR games). BTW, Rash, the bounty hunter droid from the movies is IG-88.

You say that like weaponized coffee makers aren't already a thing.

...

I've said too much.
Don B. 18th Jun 2013, 12:26 AM edit delete reply
My weaponized coffee maker seems quite content to make a good pot of coffee. Makes for good company at breakfast...seems pleasant enough. Death on burglers though. I call him Data. Annoys the hell out of him because his name is actually Frank. I refuse to accept the fact that anyone would name a weaponized coffee maker Frank.
Sheela 18th Jun 2013, 1:33 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, my weaponized coffeemaker is an expert at shooting sugarcubes across the room into my cup.

Offcourse, I don't drink Coffee, I drink tea, which annoys it greatly.

Sometimes I invite it to go outside and chase cars with me, like a good doggie should. But then it gets all up in arms and shoot out the tires instead! It just can't seem to understand that you're not actually supposed to stop the cars, since it's all about the chase and barking at the sheeples inside the cars .. but .. oh well, I guess it'll learn some day.

Oh, yeah. It'll be EASY to shut her down from a remote.

Right...?
Centcomm 18th Jun 2013, 12:35 AM edit delete reply

actually its the same as a self distruct just less messy.. the MACCS simply disconnects cutting the brain and all control systems from the body Ceci would simply drop dead. to others she would just collapse.
Marcus Ramesy 18th Jun 2013, 12:40 AM edit delete reply

if you have the proper clearance/pass codes.. shutting down a Black Angel is very easy... it snot something that you can very easily hack ... its specifically in places for exactly these kinds of worse case scenarios.
velvetsanity 18th Jun 2013, 3:58 AM edit delete reply

It's not even remotely worst-case unless she manifests psychosis, Major. She could be perfectly stable and well-adjusted and merely in need of proper guidance. Thankfully, she's currently with someone who is likely one of the most qualified in New Troy to provide that guidance. Picking them up and giving her a chance to socialize with a variety of friendly people would be very useful in making that determination.
Marcus Ramesy 18th Jun 2013, 10:41 AM edit delete reply

velvet... you have to understand.. Black Angel units are not the same as regular androids... the are nothing more than "smart" weapons... they are sent in to do their mission.. and return.. after return.. the synth brain is recycled... a new one placed in and its retrained for its next mission.. the worse thing that can ever happen to a Black Angel is that it gets self aware.. because then you end up with a broken personality.. a sociopath... at worse.. a psychotic killer... I have to weigh the odds and chances and risk the saftey of Dolly and other civlians on "what ifs" I learned from Mr. Black long ago.. if your going to play the game... stack the deck in your favor
velvetsanity 18th Jun 2013, 11:54 AM edit delete reply

One would assume, though, that they're usually aware of the weapons and such that they have installed. Ceci didn't even know she *had* combat abilities...

One also must consider that when created she was designed to be more autonomous than a normal Black Angel. She might actual have a fairly stable personality. And let's not discount having a mad genius Tony Stark type on hand (Dr. Silver) to shore up the personality and fix the broken parts.

And one last note: is there a single being in existence that displays personality that couldn't in some way be considered 'broken' by one standard or another?
Marcus Ramesy 18th Jun 2013, 1:06 PM edit delete reply

this is where one of those 3 processors come sin to play with the angels, they are not always aware of what they have on board. with the way they are loaded out, the "personality" is not aware of what they are, or what is inside them, all angels are designed to be just as autonomous as ceci, a more advanced version of a combat done.. but with a bit more flexibility in creative thought.. they have one driving mission.. and when the mission is complete.. they return home... their skills are loaded on the fly by watchdog.. as needed that is what that one of the 3 processors are for.. its the skill booster... but.. this comes at a price.. and is the reason that angels brains are scraped after they return from the mission.. use of this chip will fry the brain and cause catastrophic damage.. each time a skill set is loaded it causes damage to the system.. if used to many times.. complete shutdown.. mission failure.... this is part of the reason that black angels are designed NOT to be self aware.. they are programed to mimic the role they are to play and do a very good job at pretending to be what they are..and have the ability to adapt on the fly to any given circumstances, from underwater demolitions to nuclear bomb disposal... they "personality" doesn't know what it has on board.. that's what watchdog is for. the synth brain is used in this operation because it can create and adapt. ... but .. as Dr. Silver put forth... it can happen... and when that happens... choices have to be made..
cattservant 18th Jun 2013, 4:20 PM edit delete reply

Well, that certainly puts a different (and illuminating) light on the subject!
velvetsanity 18th Jun 2013, 5:48 PM edit delete reply

Sounds like Dr. Silver has her work cut out for her. For Ceci's sake, I hope she can get it all cleaned up...
Tokyo Rose 18th Jun 2013, 6:52 PM edit delete reply

Marcus is bang-on correct. Black Angels make Nova Roma's Cassians look like kindergarten teachers. They're not people the way standard androids are; they're weapons platforms with a slick finish.
HiFranc 24th Jul 2015, 9:31 AM edit delete reply

Can the damage be repaired? Does Dr Silver know exactly how Black Angels function? Can she repair them?

How much does Dolly know? How about Ceci? How about Lynn?
Centcomm 24th Jul 2015, 10:13 AM edit delete reply

Doctor Silver knows a lot about Andriod hardwear and softwear ..Calliope knows even more about Synthbrains :D
cattservant 18th Jun 2013, 12:49 AM edit delete reply

As Dragonrider mentioned yesterday; Is this shut down program limited to Black Angel units or is potentially much more wide spread?
Sheela 18th Jun 2013, 1:39 AM edit delete reply

I suspect most androids would have a shutdown mechanism of some sort, in case they go off their rockers ... though not necesarrily one that will make them dead, but might just paralyze them until the cops can put them in a cell.
Centcomm 18th Jun 2013, 2:56 AM edit delete reply

at Sheela - no normal andriods do not have a "kill-switch" or a remote shut off. Military units ( like Black Angels ) do have controls .. otherwise they wouldnt need inhibitor devices.. ( points at tech pages )

Sounds like they'll be picking up Dolly and Ceci earlier than planned. And as my impression puts her loyalty to Dolly rather than CentComm, I don't think there's much chance of her going H-9K unless someone who's supposed to be friendly tries (and succeeds) at hurting Dolly. The concern with that, I'm guessing, is primarily the lack of spending a year in the simulator and one in a model 0 to determine psych profile.

Dolly *is* a rather stable role model for her, and highly experienced in handling unruly teenagers.
cattservant 18th Jun 2013, 1:04 AM edit delete reply

What do you think of the possibility that Centcomm is indulging in a little vicarious adventuring through CeCi*?

*( Whom Centcomm stated to be "an independent copy" of herself.)
Sheela 18th Jun 2013, 1:38 AM edit delete reply

I doubt it, she has so many bodies, that she can just send one out for adventuring whenever she wants to and ride shotgun on it.

More likely she just made her to be seen to "do something" in cooporate speech, so that Calli won't loose faith in Centcomm .. after all, Calli can technically boss Centcomm around, she just don't know it. But I have no doubt she would if she thought that Centcomm wasn't trying to get her daughter back.

TL;DR - It's all for show to appease Calli.

Also, awesome reference to the Minx case and the "nanny droid with a screwdriver" accident.

Personally I take it she is just another full up real "Human". Granted there are things she cannot do but she has all the items a human has. Humans go H9k all the time for little reason. She may have a few bumps along the way but I figure with dolly she's in the best hands to guide her. After all dolly is good at raising kids.
Centcomm 18th Jun 2013, 3:43 AM edit delete reply

as far as Ceci's mind goes you are 100% percent correct. her body is pure mil-Spec. but she also has all the options to make her "cover" as a harmless toy realisitic..

And yes she couldnt be in better hands ( Dolly that is ... )
mjkj 18th Jun 2013, 3:51 AM edit delete reply

I believe Dolly and Mira have that covered - I hope they set the switch so, that only Dolly can activate it via droid speech or something like that...
Dragonrider 18th Jun 2013, 8:51 AM edit delete reply

My money is on Centcomm or Ramsey ordering a kill switch activation followed by a self destruct order followed by a physical attack on her.

I REALLY hope they don't end up killing her; I really like Ceci. Maybe they can just shut off or deprogram her weapons?
Centcomm 18th Jun 2013, 1:07 PM edit delete reply

hah excellent summary Kartoon... this will be resolved soonish - I promise :D
Marcus Ramesy 18th Jun 2013, 1:10 PM edit delete reply

you will hear no arguments from me Kartoon, she is most defiantly prettier than me.. and dresses better because people find the female form to be much more attractive, and tend to put most people at ease... this makes it much easier for them to assassinate their targets, most people don't expect cute and innocent to be a ruthless killer
Dragonrider 18th Jun 2013, 1:22 PM edit delete reply

Uh...cute and innocent? They were never in a war zone where cute and innocent usually meant a shaped charge strapped to their body so they could blow up several people at once. Current terrorists borrowed a page from older and wiser terrorists when they started using human bombs.
Centcomm 18th Jun 2013, 1:24 PM edit delete reply

Stormwind13 24th Jun 2013, 11:17 AM edit delete reply

Marcus - Yeah, I think that is why I loved Sapphire in CoH so much. Was built as a Sylph (see the old AD&D Monster Manual entry). Sliders for height all the way down. Had insect wings and was as cute as I could make her.
She could also summon a Lightning Storm at will, call forth up to THREE tornadoes (third one came up before the first faded), put out ALMOST a perpetual squad of three invincible armed aerial servants and call down an Ice Storm every fight.
Yeah, keep thinking she was some little flighty fluff. See what happened to you. :-D
Don B. 18th Jun 2013, 2:32 PM edit delete reply
A writers dilemma: should this character die? What happens when you write a character who's death was intended from the very beginning but has turned into a fan favorite? I'm not saying this was the intention for Ceci. I'm using her as a hypothetical example for the purpose of discussion. So there you are with someone who was supposed to die in the course of the story...do you stay the course and risk heavy backlash from your readership, or do you spare them and find another way to accomplish what you set out to do with this death? Personally, I tend to go with staying the course. Done right, this death will have an impact like nothing else on the fans. The death of Aerith in Final Fantasy VII is a good example of what I mean. Sure, fans were upset but it was THE single defining moment in the story. People are still talking about it all these years later. I'd like to hear others opinions on this.
Centcomm 18th Jun 2013, 3:02 PM edit delete reply

Ive seen this asked before on the comic fury forums. and yes SOME charcters are slated to die. it happens. fights are ugly brutal things and some deaths are just plain sensless..

However. Ceci IS a fan favorite from what I can tell, HOWEVER IF she is slated to be killed. It will happen. I love you guys tons. and dont want to anger or upset anyone enough to stop reading. but, and im sure that Rose, Black and Marcus will agree if a charcter is slated to take a dirt nap. they will. guess you will have to stay tuned eh? :D but I am curious what others think - thank you Don for posting that.
Don B. 18th Jun 2013, 3:28 PM edit delete reply
I was hoping that you would say something like that about character deaths, CentComm. I like for there to be real consequence in a story. I may not like who ends up dying, but you won't lose me because of it.

this is a question that should be asked of the writer of game of thrones.... since every one dies in the series it seems like.. its hard to develop any attachment to the characters because as soon as you like them.. he kills them off...
Tokyo Rose 18th Jun 2013, 7:02 PM edit delete reply

I write for two people: myself and my artist. This is the story we're telling, and if people like it, great. If not, at least it's been told.

The biggest problem I run into with killing characters is when the two of us get attached to them. If that happens, it's typically about the time when I turn my eye fully onto them and start fleshing them out beyond a basic outline. If I *must* kill a character, I tend to hold myself aloof and *not* build them up very much. Otherwise I start making excuses for why I need to change the story to keep them alive, and I feel that tends to damage the story as a whole. (Unless the personality they've developed is seriously horrible. I'm looking at you, Malkin. I LOVED KILLING YOU.)
Centcomm 18th Jun 2013, 7:08 PM edit delete reply

Dont forget Gavin too.. :D although yeah Malkin holds so far the worst position..
Tokyo Rose 18th Jun 2013, 7:12 PM edit delete reply

Gavin barely counts. He was on the "zero personality development" list. :D
velvetsanity 18th Jun 2013, 5:51 PM edit delete reply

And Aeryth is one of the biggest reasons I lost *all* interest in the entire Final Fantasy series...
Marcus Ramesy 18th Jun 2013, 6:36 PM edit delete reply

sadly the final fantasy series has nothing to do with each other.. each game/story is self contained in its own world.. own chraacters.. the only exceptions have been crissis core... and an of the x-2 versions
velvetsanity 18th Jun 2013, 6:54 PM edit delete reply

Well, I wasn't overly fond of 7 even before they killed Aeryth...that was really just the final straw. Doubly so since she was effectively Belldandy (who I'm a major fan of).

its part of my job to be the black cloud of negativity, as much as I would love to hope for the best and assume every thing is candy canes and rainbows.... its a dangerous world out there... and I have to think of the worse case scenario first ... and then do what I can to prevent that... its a shitty job some days.... but.. some one has to do it.

I have written Ceci off, she was destined to go Bye-Bye from the Git-Go, or you have done a great job of misdirection on this. You have set her up as the ill-fated heroine who dies bravely that others may live. She has, as I see it, one chance to make it Lynns Boyfriend and T.R. between them they might be able to defuse the ticking time bomb she has deep planted in her that will cause her plasma thrower to overload with spectacular results. Such as haven't been seen sine the last 4th fireworks in Washington DC. I know you're not commenting yes or no.

I understand staying true to your story, but sometimes things change.
I remember David Weber planning on killing Honor Harrington off in Mission of Honor, but changing his mind after discussions with Eric Flint, I believe.
So don't get so locked in on something that you can't change it and maybe still tell the story you want to tell. Maybe even tell it better with the revisions.

actually the readers did change one part of the Story Dolly was never meant to be a main charcter.. but everyone liked her so much she was re-written into a larger part.

So yes .. we do pay attention.

Stormwind13: Yes, Honor did manage to survive but if memory serves, she lost an eye and an arm along the way. What he didn't and doesn't do is shy away from having longstanding and sometimes popular characters die in the course of the story. It's not uncommon for him to establish a character and have them killed 5 or 6 books later. I have grown attached to several of these characters only to have them suddenly die. I didn't much like that but even when the deaths were random/senseless they all had meaning attached to them in the larger picture. Even if it was only to show that Death comes for all and plays no favorites.

Yes Don, she suffered the loss of an eye, nerve deadness to one side of her face and having her arm sawed off by a tri-barrel. He had Honor emulating Horatio Nelson down to the WOUNDS he took. Because of that, I fully expected him to kill her off. I was pleasantly surprised when he backed off from that, because I'm not sure I would have enjoyed the story as much without her.

I have a tendency to choose life, always. Understand that death is coming for all of us, but want the ones that make it an interesting story to stay around as long as possible (all the way to the end, preferably). :-)

Yay! Readers' opinions matter!

I'd argue that Dolly decided she was a main character by sheer force of will. Some characters just DO THIS. I have done a fuckton of writing, and of roleplaying, and sometimes the very best characters are the ones who piss YOUR plan out the window and take the reins themselves.

Dolly is kinda like that isnt she..

James Bond was supposed to die in the book before Man With The Golden Gun, by then Ian Flemming hated him. Francisco Scaramanga was supposed to kill him off in Man with the Golden Gun but the editors wouldn't let that happen and now the movie companies have the franchise and we're stuck with him forever. By the final Dune novel Frank Herbert wanted to kill off all the characters but editors wouldn't let him. Here however there is no editorial board to veto removal of any character.

Has anyone thought of the possibility that after her story is done that Ceci could be downloaded before "death" and placed in a new body?

No one ever suspects the coffee maker.
"You call that a combat droid"!?

"No sir! We call it... Mr.Coffee! Care for some"?
